I may be missing the point Mary but I can comment on my very novice experience and application. From how I am learning to define hypnosis;
These exercises give an opportunity to invite another into an expereince to focus attention to the point of absorbtion. At this point I have had reported a nice theraputic quiet (even when facilities was talking loudly in the corridor) followed by realisations after an invitation to notice what/ if any strength or wonderings come from within themselves before coming back into the conversation with me.
It has been the knowing that comes from these expreinces that has been most interesting and reportedly helpful so far:
Client in determined recovery after living with symptoms of chronic anxiety for as long as she can remember. "So I need to trust myself to let my body do this. Was this why I couldn't let myself do high jump in primary school?"
Client unable to participate in work/life activities because of chronic pain that medical model approaches give no relief or diagnosis. When invited to immerse self in conversation about 'likes' instead of pain and pain management for majority of appointment "I just can't let it go can I. Can I?"
I sense there is more to come for these 'knowings' as they send out ripples beyond the appointment time they have with me. Maybe others can add more.

Thanks for your comments, Cynthy. I find what you have written to be truly inspiring for someone beginning to apply what you are learning.
I continue to find how important it is to discover with each individual what's missing for them [confidence for the first person you wrote about, and the possibility of just letting it go for the second] and then to look with each individual for precisely what is missing for them in the experience that they like.
With the first person, how does she trust herself, and for the second, experiences where she has just let something go.
Congratulations on opening yourself to discovering how you can apply this in your own way.
Thank you Cynthy for the excellent and illuminating clarification you shared.
You have added clarity to the concept and to its application. :-)
Thanks Mary for posting your question which triggered this thread.
A very big thanks to Rob for making this available and accessible for all of us!
I would love to practice with someone.
Please contact me if you would like to set up some time.
Thanks.
I certainly had an understanding of what hypnosis was--counting backwards from 10, or leading a person "down stairs" until they were in a trance. It was an altered state of consciousness. You are speaking of it now as a deep conversation. How does one know when the client is in it? I love all the things people are saying, but I don't understand how to get there.
Thanks Mary for keeping this discussion going.
I too learned the “classical” approach to hypnosis that you describe.
Later, I learned the conversational approach that Rob is now teaching us.
I love your term, “a deep conversation”.
I have found that clients benefit as deeply from a deep conversation as they do from the classical approach.
Experiment, and share your discoveries. :-)

Mary, could you please look here and see if this makes any sense to you?
The whole context of this programme follows Erickson's invitation to demystify nd normalise hypnosis so that it becomes more accessible to therapists and clients rather than some mechanical collection of techniques and scripts.
He emphasised the uniqueness of each individual client and invite us to tailor our aproach to each individual rather than tailoring the individual to a rigid set of procedures.
When we buy shoes we want shoes that fit our feet. We don't want our feet altered to fit some predetermined shoe size.
This was one of Erickson's major contributions and adds a huge difference to the effectiveness of our work.
If you're interested, try playing with the process, and I'd recommend that you start at the beginning to get the foundations in place.
Enjoy your learning.

I too like the phrase deep conversation.
So far my clients have been too polite to say if it is not taking to them but I suspect x2 had not initially because of clues there body/ expression gave and the sameness (not sure that is a word) of our conversation.
I found family and friends with more a preparedness to be honest (laughing at the way my invitations came out or saying "I feel silly" when I was driving instead of them) which helps to find tune how I have introduced everyday hypnosis.

Hi Annabel,
Thanks for your willingness to practice.Contact me directly (tatcoach@gmail.com)
so that we can set up a time.
Still finding my way, these comments are very helpful too. Thanks to all.
I'm enjoying getting around to conversational hypnosis. I have always asked for the same abilities since I was young and some of they have been confusing/disorientating as they develop as I do the course as they are the inverse of what I was expecting and at first I thought the worst. Now I realise as they come along with me I am learning what they are useful for in practise. The sky is the limit but I believe that is no longer the bootcase and serendipity rules at the moment
I feel lost. Am I missing a part of the program. I am afraid that I totally do not understand how the information I have listened to is a way of doing hypnosis.
